چکیده

Reliable multicast applications use feedback messages to report receiving status of receivers. This results in the well-known feedback implosion and scalability problems. Also, quick loss response from receivers and low multicast overhead, e.g. control messages and session messages, are desired. We present a feedback implosion control mechanism that groups the multicast members into areas, with each area having an Area Representative (AR). The AR provides immediate feedback messages and suppresses the superfluous feedback messages from other receivers in its area. The mechanism doesn't need any support from underlying networks except correct multicast packet routing. No network topology or multicast group membership information is needed. Each receiver selects its AR independently; areas are formed or dismissed automatically and dynamically when network situation changes. Preliminary simulation results show that our mechanism has good feedback suppression, fast loss response and is scalable with the group size.

Optimal Deterministic Timeouts for Reliable Scalable Multicast

Reliable multicast protocols suuer from the problem of feedback implosion. To avoid this problem, the number of receivers sending feedback in case of loss must be small. However, losses experienced by diierent receivers are strongly correlated, since receivers share common resources in the multicast tree. One approach to feedback implosion avoidance relies on delaying feedback at the receivers....

Applying deterministic feedback suppression to reliable multicasting protocols

IP multicast is becoming the emerging infrastructure for mass delivery of information, from streaming audio and video media to multi-player games, software distributions and shared whiteboards. There have been several proposals to expand the basic unreliable service so that it can provide reliable delivery of data, in terms of ordering and loss recovery. Some of these proposals do not scale wel...

Implosion Control for Multipoint Applications1

One of the new challenges posed by multipoint applications in future networks is scalable multicast error control. Current error control mechanisms do not scale because they do not deal with message implosion, caused by synchronized feedback messages (e.g. positive or negative acknowledgments) from the receivers in a multicast connection. Implosion control can be performed by the receivers or t...

An End-to-End Reliable Multicast Protocol Using Polling for Scaleability

Reliable sender-based one-to-many protocols do not scale well due mainly to implosion caused by excessive rate of feedback packets arriving from receivers. We show that this problem can be circumvented by making the sender poll the receivers at carefully planned timing instants, so that the arrival rate of feedback packets is not large enough to cause implosion. We describe a generic end-to-end...
